How to Transition to Sustainable Haircare
Share
Many consumers are making the move towards sustainable haircare. With increasing consumer knowledge, many informed people are "throwing out" their old ways of purchasing and moving to a system that works for them while also prioritizing the environment. However, even though there is a large movement towards sustainability, many people are finding it hard to prioritize sustainability in todays busy world and harsh economic climate. Heres the good news? You don't have to be perfect to help the earth. We will discuss how the everyday consumer can make small changes that can create a big impact.
1. Buying in bulk
Yes, you can still buy your favorite beauty products without needing to change your routine at all! Many companies are allowing their customers to buy larger volumes of product at once in larger containers. Lids and caps are typically the part of the bottle that is hardest to recycle and the most likely to come from virgin (non recycled) plastics. Cutting down on these lids and the amount of bottle needed per oz of product can really make a difference when trying to cut down on waste.
2. Don't feel pressured to throw out all your old products right away
It's exciting to think about having a fully sustainable beauty routine, but throwing away your products is wasteful. It hurts your environmental impact more than just using them up. Not to mention the upfront price of purchasing a whole new beauty routine. Try to finish the products you already have and as you finish them, slowly replace them with more sustainable options.
3. Buy from companies that use recycled materials
Many companies use partially or fully recycled materials. Look to see if your favorite brands have packaging options that have at least some percentage of recycled materials. Bonus points if the materials are ocean-bound plastics or plastics collected directly from the ocean.
4. Buy products that are refillable
Some brands have introduced innovative refillable packaging, allowing you to keep the original outer container while swapping out the inner product packaging.
This is a great way to minimize waste while still keeping the ease and convenience of your favorite beauty products.
5. Buy products that come in more sustainable materials
Buying products that come in things like aluminum, paper, cardboard, or glass can help cut down on all of the packaging that goes into our landfills daily. Many of these more sustainable materials can be reused and recycled rather than breaking down into microplastics and living in our landfills for years.
Final thoughts
Sustainability isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. By making small, conscious changes in your beauty routine, you can contribute to a healthier planet without overwhelming yourself.
Even if you only adopt one or two of these habits, you’re still making a difference. Every step counts!
